Diverse Voices: How To Represent Diversity Through Voice

Voice diversity introduces the issues and identities that are found in audio representation. It considers the intersections of race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and many other identities through careful analysis of audio from a large variety of voices. We have over 1000 professional, unique and diverse voice artists in our ChatterBox team that cover over 80 languages, and range in age from 5 to 105. We pride ourselves on having a very diverse set of voices in our portfolio, however we realise that discussions around diversity and representation are always important, and that diverse voices can help to promote innovation and progression within the industry.

Diversity and inclusion is not a simple matter of balancing gender and race in your media, it means providing an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and equal, and nobody is left behind. When considering diversity, it is not all about the numbers, you need to have representation in all areas of creation. So, let’s talk about some of the different types of diversity.

Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity can be related to each individual person’s ethnicity and is usually influenced by a combination of the society that we were raised in, or by our family values. It is important to learn about other cultures to help us to understand different perspectives from the world that we live in. The modern world has become an extremely culturally diverse and enriched place, with many different cultures already mixing together and learning from each other.

Language can be an important defining factor between different cultures. It can even be an excellent tool for bringing different cultures together. At Chatterbox, our voice artists can communicate through upwards of eighty languages, and we are happy to provide an excellent language translation service.

Racial Diversity

Race relates to a person’s grouping based on physical traits, or their skin colour. However, there is an increasingly dominant scientific view that race is actually a social construct, rather than being biologically defined. In our modern world, people from all different racial backgrounds live all over the globe – and it is important that they can feel represented wherever they are.

Religious Diversity

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different religious and spiritual beliefs across the globe. From personal spiritual beliefs, to long-established religions with their own huge internal diversity. It is important that these beliefs are not forgotten, but it is also important that those who do not believe in traditional religions or spiritual ideas can feel represented.

Age Diversity

Age diversity is all about having a range of ages within a group, with an important weight placed on the various generations present. It means not ignoring those whose voices can sometimes be drowned out by those younger or older than themselves.

Sex/Gender and Sexual Orientation Diversity

The terms sex and gender can be used in the traditional way of determining individuals as male or female. However, as gender is increasingly being re-defined a more appropriate term for this type of diversity would be ‘gender diversity’, as there are multiple variations in gender and sexual orientation. Gender is not always a binary, and there is a large and diverse spectrum across which people can identify.

Disability

Within this type of diversity there are a number of different types of disabilities or chronic conditions, ranging from mental to physical. This is important to look at as it broadens the lens and embraces all the possibilities of human variety. Some disabilities, particularly mental disabilities, have long been overshadowed and even ignored as they are not always identifiable just from looking at somebody.
